Athletes watch film of their mistakes on purpose. Most people would rather never rewind.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Deliberate rewatching is a strange, unnatural habit, and it is also why improvement in sport runs so much faster than improvement anywhere else. Outside of it people live on impressions, which are kind and vague, so the same errors repeat for years without ever being seen clearly. Tape is uncomfortable and it is also specific.

Find a way to rewind something you are not an athlete at. Reread the essay you got back, replay how you spoke in an argument, look at last month’s spending. Pick one, once, and look for a single fixable thing.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would you find if you deliberately revisited your worst day?
