When you hurt someone, start with repair. The explanation can come later, if they want it.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Explaining first puts your reasoning ahead of their experience, and that order gets felt even when the words are good. They are dealing with what happened, and a well-built account of why asks them to consider your position before anyone has tended to theirs. Repair first does not mean you have no reasons, only that the reasons can wait.
Lead with what you are sorry for and what you will do, then stop talking. If they ask why, tell them. If they never ask, you have lost nothing but the chance to be understood on your own schedule.
Who needed repair from you while you offered reasons instead?
