“It got broken” and “I broke it” describe the same plate. Only one describes a grown-up.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Passive wording is a small act of hiding in plain sight. The plate is in the same number of pieces either way, but one sentence has a person in it and the other quietly removes them. Adults who get trusted with things tend to be the ones who keep themselves in the sentence. People register the difference immediately.

Catch yourself this week when a verb arrives without an owner: it got lost, it did not get sent, the shift got covered badly. Put yourself back in and say it out loud. Then add what you are doing about it, and let that be the whole conversation.
