“We lost” and “they lost it for us” sound different. Teammates hear the difference.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Teams hear the pronoun before they hear the analysis. Spreading the result across everyone costs you nothing when you had a decent game and buys you a lot when you did not. Pointing at the one player who missed is accurate and corrosive, because everyone present starts wondering when it will be their turn. Teammates remember who covered for them.
After the next loss, say we in public and keep the specifics private. If there is something a teammate needs to hear, say it to them alone, and say the thing you got wrong first. Public blame buys one comfortable evening and costs you a season of trust.
After a loss, do you still speak as part of the team?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
