If you know nothing about a field, you cannot tell competent help from confident help, and the two are hard to distinguish by manner alone. A basic working understanding, not expertise, is enough to ask the right questions and notice when the answers do not fit. That small amount of knowledge protects you more than any amount of trust.
With anything important that you outsource, spend a couple of hours learning the fundamentals. Enough to know what the process should involve and what a reasonable price looks like. You are not trying to do it yourself, only to be a customer who can tell.
How would you know if the expert you hired was any good?
