Some words you use casually were invented because someone once needed a sound for an idea.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Every word was made up by somebody. At some point a person needed a sound for a thing that had no name, used one, and it caught. The words you use without thinking are all inventions that happened to survive, which makes ordinary speech a kind of inherited accumulation of other people’s needs.

The practical piece is that language stays inventable. If you cannot name what you are feeling or what is happening in a situation, you are allowed to build a phrase for it. Naming something imprecisely is usually better than leaving it unnamed and therefore unthinkable.
