A euphemism can spare a feeling or conceal a responsibility.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Softened language does two jobs and they look identical from outside. Sometimes it protects a person from unnecessary harshness at a hard moment, which is decent. Sometimes it dissolves responsibility, turning something someone did into something that happened, and the vagueness is doing the work of avoiding accountability.

When you reach for a gentler phrase, ask which of the two you are doing. If it is kindness, keep it. If it removes the person who acted from the sentence, put them back, since the softening is protecting you rather than anyone else.
