The word normal often contains an unannounced autobiography.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
When someone says normal, they are usually describing the conditions of their own upbringing without realising it. The size of family that felt standard, the amount of money that seemed ordinary, the way people spoke to each other at dinner. It is presented as a general fact and it is a personal history in disguise.
Catch yourself using the word and ask what specifically you mean and where you learned it. The same applies when someone tells you that something about your life is not normal. Ask normal for whom, and notice how often the answer turns out to be for them.
What do you call normal that is only familiar to you?
