A word can spread widely before anyone agrees on what it means. It becomes a badge, a shorthand, a way of signalling which side you are on, and people use it confidently in conversations where each participant means something different. The agreement is about the sound, not the content.

When a term is everywhere, ask a few people to define it and watch the answers diverge. In your own use, either define it once or reach for the longer plain description. Precision loses you some fluency and it gains you a conversation that is actually about the same thing.
