The most consequential word in a promise may be until.
GRATITUDE
GRATITUDE
Promises often have an unspoken expiry. I will support you, until it becomes costly. I am with you, until circumstances change. The until is rarely stated and it determines what the promise is actually worth, which is why the real test of a commitment happens only when keeping it starts to hurt.
When you make a commitment, be honest with yourself about your conditions and say the important ones out loud. And when you receive one, notice whether it has been made in easy circumstances only. It is fair to ask what happens if things get difficult.
Which promise made to you quietly came with an expiry?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
