A city reveals its assumptions about bodies at the first staircase.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

A staircase with no alternative announces who the place was built for. It says, without saying it, that everyone using this building can climb, and everyone who cannot was not part of the picture when it was designed. Physical environments are full of these unstated assumptions about bodies.

Walk a familiar route imagining a pushchair, a wheelchair, a bad knee, or poor eyesight. You will notice things you have never seen. And where you have any say in how a space is arranged, that walk is worth more than any amount of good intention.
