A city map shows roads more easily than it shows where people feel safe crossing them.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
A map shows you where the roads are and cannot show you where a person feels able to cross. The gap between the legal route and the usable one is filled with judgments about traffic speed, sightlines, and confidence, and it varies enormously between an adult in a hurry and a child or an older person.
When you assess whether somewhere is walkable, do it on foot rather than on a screen, and preferably with someone slower than you. The information you get that way is not available in any plan, and it is the information that decides whether people actually walk.
Which route do you take that no map would recommend?
