A public space can be technically open and socially guarded.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

A place can be legally open and still make it clear who is welcome. Through who else is there, how the staff behave, what the signage assumes, how people are looked at. Nobody is turned away and some people understand immediately that the space is not for them.

If you belong somewhere easily, look at who is not there and consider why. And if you can affect the atmosphere of a place, remember that welcome is made of small behaviours rather than policies. Being open is the minimum and it does not accomplish very much on its own.
