The person who never moved may have watched an entire hometown leave around them.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Staying still can be its own kind of loss. The person who never left watched the departures accumulate, one friend at a time, until the place they stayed for is populated by strangers. They kept the address while everything the address meant relocated, and nobody thinks to ask them about that because leaving is the story we know how to hear. Absence looks different from the inside of the town than from the outside.

If you are the one who left, ask the one who stayed what changed rather than reporting what you have been doing. If you are the one who stayed, it is worth saying out loud that you have also lost something. Neither position is the easy one, and treating them as equally real makes the conversation possible.
