A complaint becomes evidence of disloyalty in places that confuse belonging with silence.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

In some places, saying something is wrong is heard as being against us. Belonging gets defined by agreement rather than by commitment, so the person who raises a problem is treated as having declared a side. That reading is convenient, because it lets the group avoid the substance entirely and feel loyal while doing it. The cost is that the problem stays.

Notice whether the responses to complaints in your team are about the issue or about the person raising it. If you have any standing, thank the person out loud and then address the point. And if you are the one raising something, saying plainly that you are raising it because you are committed here removes at least one easy misreading.
