A familiar route can survive in your body after the street names disappear from memory.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Your body keeps routes your mind has released. You can walk somewhere accurately while being unable to say a single street name, because the sequence lives in movement rather than in language. Two different systems held the same journey, and one of them is much more durable than the one you would consult.
This is worth trusting more than you probably do, in walking, in playing something, in any practised skill. When conscious recall fails, starting the motion often retrieves it. And it is a reminder that a lot of what you know is not stored in a form you can say out loud.
What can your hands or feet still do without your attention?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
