The details you notice in an old photograph change as your present concerns change.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

The photograph is fixed and you are not. At twenty you saw yourself in it, at forty you notice your mother’s expression, at sixty you notice how young everyone was. The image has not gained detail, you have gained the concerns that make particular details visible. Looking is always done from somewhere.

Try returning to an old picture you think you know. Note what stands out now and compare it with what you remember noticing. The difference is a fairly accurate account of what has changed in you.
