A label can offer community while making every departure feel like betrayal.

Labels give you people, and the price is that leaving becomes a moral event. What was a description of yourself is also a membership, and once your identity is shared, changing your mind reads to others as walking out on them. That makes honest revision expensive in exactly the places where community is strongest.
If you are drifting from something that gave you people, try to separate the beliefs from the relationships and keep what you can of the second. Say what has changed rather than disappearing. And if someone is drifting from a group of yours, letting them go without penalty is what makes the group worth belonging to.
