The same meal can be an expense, a wage, a celebration, and an inconvenience to four different people.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
One table, four experiences. It is a business expense to one person, the wage of the person serving, a celebration for the family at the next table, and an interruption to someone who wanted to be at home. The same event is doing entirely different work in each life and none of them can see the others.
It is worth pausing on this in any shared setting, particularly where someone is being paid to be there. A small acknowledgment of that changes very little and is worth doing. And it is a useful correction whenever you assume everyone present is having the occasion you are having.
Whose work made your last good evening possible?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
