The value of a collectible can depend on most people being unable to have it.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Part of what you are buying is other people’s exclusion. The rarity is the product, and if everyone could own one the value would collapse, which means the pleasure depends on a great many people not having it. That is worth stating plainly because it is usually left implicit in the language of craftsmanship and heritage.
This is not an argument against owning anything. It is worth knowing which part of your enjoyment is the object and which part is the scarcity. If the object would still please you if it were common, you are on solid ground.
What do you prize partly because few people have it?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
