The right to purchase something is not the same as a reasonable chance to afford it.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Being permitted to buy something is not access. The house, the treatment, the course, is legally available to everyone and reachable by a fraction, and describing it as available is technically accurate and practically meaningless. Formal openness and real possibility get discussed as though they were the same thing.

When you hear that something is open to all, ask what proportion of people could actually pay for it. If you set prices for anything, that question is worth asking of your own work. Nobody has to be excluded for exclusion to be the outcome.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What is technically open to you but practically out of reach?

MORE IN MEANING & PERSPECTIVE

Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
