A classroom can reward quick answers before discovering who had the deeper question.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Speed is easy to observe and depth is not. The hand that goes up first sets the pace, gets the credit, and moves the lesson along, while the person still turning the problem over is doing something more valuable and entirely invisible. Rooms reward whatever they can see quickly.

If you teach or run meetings, build in a pause before taking any answer. Thirty seconds changes who speaks. And if you are slow in a fast room, that is a difference in process rather than in capacity, and it is worth saying that you would like a moment.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where does being fast get you more credit than being thorough?
