The length of a silence depends partly on what you expected to hear next.

GRATITUDE
Silence has no fixed length. Its size is set by what you were braced for: a pause feels endless when you were waiting for reassurance, and passes unnoticed when you expected nothing. The other person may be thinking, distracted, or simply not talking, while you are measuring the gap against a hope you never said aloud.
When a silence starts to feel loud, notice the expectation underneath it before drawing conclusions. Often the honest move is to say the thing you were hoping to hear from them, or ask for it directly. And when you are the one who has gone quiet, a few words about why can spare somebody a long, invented interpretation.
