A melody can cross a language barrier while carrying words the listener would reject.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Music can carry a message past every defence the listener has. The melody arrives first and does its work on the body, and by the time the words are being weighed, the sympathy is already established. This is why a song can persuade someone of something they would reject flatly on a page.

The practical point is not to distrust music but to notice the sequence. When something moves you strongly and quickly, let it move you, and then read the words separately and coldly at some other hour. Anything that survives both is worth keeping. Anything that only survives the first is worth enjoying without granting it authority.
