The discarded scene still influenced the story by teaching its maker what did not belong.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

A scene cut from the finished work still shaped it. Writing it taught the maker where the boundary was, and the story that remains was defined partly by that discovery. The visible thing is bordered by everything that was tried and removed, even though none of it can be pointed to.

This changes how you should count wasted effort. The project that went nowhere, the approach that failed, the conversation that led nowhere useful: these often set the edges of what you eventually did well. When you assess a period of work, include what it ruled out. Elimination is progress, and it looks like nothing from the outside.
