The forest floor is yesterday’s canopy becoming tomorrow’s conditions.

The floor of a forest is the ceiling of a previous forest, broken down into what the next one will grow from. Nothing is discarded; the whole system is a slow conversion of what has finished into the conditions for what is starting. There is no separate category for waste.
It is a useful image for endings. What ends does not simply vanish, and much of what you are working with now was made from something that finished. When a project, a relationship, or a version of your life collapses, some of the material stays and becomes ground. That is not a consolation exactly, but it is accurate, and it is a slower and better way to think about loss than replacement.
