If nature kept a guest book, would we sign as residents, visitors, or owners?

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Residents, visitors, and owners imply completely different obligations. An owner may do as they like, a visitor should leave things as found, and a resident has to live with the consequences of their own behaviour. Which word you would honestly sign says a great deal about how you treat the place.

Try answering it for a real week rather than in principle. Look at how you actually behaved toward the physical world: what you took, what you left, what you assumed would be handled. Most people say resident and behave like owners. Closing that gap does not require a philosophy, only noticing which of the three your ordinary conduct is describing.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Do you treat the place you live as borrowed or as yours?
