The guest who refuses seconds may be full, shy, cautious, or protecting someone else’s share.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

A refusal of seconds has many possible causes and gives no clue which. Fullness, shyness, dietary caution, dislike, or a quiet decision that someone else should have more: the same two words cover all of it. Reading a single motive into it is a guess presented as understanding.

The useful practice is to stop making the refusal into information. Offer once, warmly, and let it go without interpreting. Pressing is rarely kind, since the person with the most sensitive reason is the one least able to explain it. And in general, brief social refusals are among the least reliable evidence available about what anyone is thinking.
