A spectator can feel ownership of a team without being responsible for any of its work.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Supporters feel ownership without responsibility, which is a genuinely odd combination. The team is ours in victory and their performance is theirs in defeat, and none of the work, risk, or consequence sits with the person feeling the ownership. It is participation on extremely favourable terms.

That is fine as long as it stays where it belongs. The trouble comes when the same posture appears in contexts with real stakes: claiming a project, a movement, or a community while carrying none of the work. Ask occasionally, about anything you say you belong to, what you actually contribute, and whether the belonging is doing any work in the other direction.
