A charitable act can leave untouched the arrangement that made charity necessary.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Relieving a need is not the same as removing what produces the need. Both matter, and they are separate, and the good feeling from the first can quietly satisfy the urge that might otherwise have led to the second. Structures survive comfortably alongside generosity that treats their effects.

None of which is an argument against helping people now, since people need help now. It is a prompt to ask, occasionally, what keeps producing the situation you keep responding to, and whether there is anything within your reach that touches that. Give, and also spend some of your attention one level up.
