Offer company without requiring the grieving person to tell the story again.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Grief makes narration expensive. Every visit that begins with what happened asks the person to walk back through the worst part in order to earn the comfort that follows, and after a while they start declining company rather than repeat it. What most people want at that stage is presence without a price: someone in the room who already knows, or who does not need to.

Go over with food, sit down, and talk about something ordinary unless they steer elsewhere. Say you are around and mean it in a way that does not require an update. If they want to tell it again, they will, and then you listen.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH
