Some experiences do not convert into language, and the effort to convert them can spoil them. Articulacy gets treated as proof of feeling, so the one who says nothing at the top of the hill seems less moved than the one with a phrase ready. Often it runs the other way, and hunting for the right words moves you out of the moment and into performance. Enjoyment owes nobody a report.
Next time you are somewhere striking, let yourself not narrate it. Take the photograph or do not, then put the phone away. Notice how much of the urge to comment is aimed at people who are not even there.
Where do you narrate an experience instead of simply having it?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
