A pet cannot look elsewhere. Whatever the schedule is, whatever the noise level or the pace of the walks or the length of the empty afternoon, that is the entire world available to them, and there is no way for them to negotiate for a different one. The dependence is total in a way that is easy to forget once the animal is familiar and quiet about it.

Look at one part of their day that exists for your convenience rather than their comfort. Change the small thing you can. They cannot ask, so the noticing has to be yours.
