The work that once suited you does not get permanent authority over what should suit you next.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

A job that fit you at twenty-five can become the reason you never ask what fits you now. It supplies the vocabulary, the contacts, and the sense of what counts as realistic, and after enough years it starts answering questions it was never qualified to answer. Past fit is information about who you were, not a ruling about who you may become.

Ask what you would look into if your history were not a factor. Then take one small step that direction without quitting anything: a conversation, a class, a weekend attempt. Let the old work keep its place without keeping the vote.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What work still fits the person you used to be?
