The person trying a new skill needs room for awkwardness before reliability appears.

Every skill has a stage where the person is worse than they will be and knows it. If that stage is met with correction, teasing, or visible impatience, most people quit inside it, which is why so few things get past the clumsy weeks. Reliability is built out of unimpressive attempts that nobody interrupted.
If you are learning, expect to be bad for longer than feels reasonable and continue anyway. If you are watching, say nothing about the mistakes unless asked. Let the awkward stage be uneventful, because that is what carries people through it.
Where do you quit a skill during its awkward stretch?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
