A personal story deserves care for the people who did not choose to become characters in it.

Your life overlaps with other lives, and telling your part means telling some of theirs. The sister in the story did not agree to be in it, and will meet her version in the mouths of people she has never met. That does not mean the story cannot be told. It means the telling carries a duty the teller can easily forget.

Before you publish or post something that includes another person, ask what they would feel reading it, and whether the detail that identifies them is doing necessary work. Change what can be changed without weakening the truth. Ask them first, and be prepared to hear no.
