A good coach leaves athletes able to explain what they are working toward.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Being directed and being developed are not the same thing. A player who can only follow instructions performs well while the coach is present and stalls the moment they are not, because the understanding lived in one person. When someone can say what they are working on and why, the improvement belongs to them and travels with them.

If you are teaching anyone anything, ask them at the end of a session what they are working on. Listen for whether the answer is yours or theirs. If it comes back as your words repeated, spend the next session on the reasoning rather than the drill.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Can the people you guide describe the goal in their own words?
