A new responsibility deserves space in your life before it becomes part of your identity.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

The role arrives before the work does. Newly a manager, a parent, a carer, and the title starts describing you immediately while the actual practice has barely begun. Identity moves faster than competence, and it brings expectations with it: how you should feel about it, how much of you it should take.

For the first months, treat a new responsibility as something you do rather than something you are. Give it a defined amount of time and see what it actually requires before letting it expand. And keep at least one part of your week that has nothing to do with it, because you will want that part later.
