The kindest witness sometimes gives an embarrassed person something ordinary to do next.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Embarrassment gets worse when it is discussed. Sympathy, however well meant, keeps the spotlight where the person least wants it, and every kind word extends the moment they are trying to leave. What actually helps is an ordinary next thing: a question about something else, a plate to carry, a job that puts their hands to use.

When someone is mortified, hand them a small task and change the subject in the same breath. Save any comment for later, privately, if it is needed at all. Ordinariness is the fastest route back, and you can offer it without anybody having to name what happened.
