A good gathering makes room for contributions that are not all measured in money.
GRATITUDE
GRATITUDE
When the only currency at a gathering is money, some people are quietly priced out. Yet the person who cooked all afternoon, drove three others, brought the chairs, or stayed to clean the kitchen has given at least as much, and often more of what makes an evening work. Counting only the bill flattens that into one number and makes generous people look like they gave less.
Name the other contributions out loud when you thank people. Ask for what someone can actually give rather than a flat share. If you have less money, offer time or skill early, since it is easier to give before the list is set.
What do you bring to gatherings that costs time rather than money?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
