A missed target deserves an explanation that includes what the team was working with.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

A number that was not reached tells you almost nothing on its own. What matters is the conditions behind it: who was absent, what arrived late, which assumptions turned out to be wrong. Leaving those out makes effort look like failure and hides the thing that would actually need fixing next time, which is rarely the people.

When you report a shortfall, describe the resources and the obstacles alongside the result. Stay factual rather than defensive, since a list of conditions is not a list of excuses. If you are receiving the report, ask what they were working with before you ask anything else.
