A clear question can prevent goodwill from being spent on the wrong task.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

People want to help, and helping badly is expensive for both sides. Without a clear ask, a willing person guesses, invests real hours in their guess, and then presents something you cannot use. Now you have to choose between wasting their effort and pretending it was what you meant, and they are less likely to offer again.

Before someone starts, ask the one question that removes the biggest ambiguity: what does done look like, which version, by when. Thirty seconds there protects hours of somebody’s generosity.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose good intentions went to work you never actually needed?
