The person stepping back can still care deeply about what continues without them.

Leaving a role does not switch off the years of attention that went into it. Someone who hands over a team, a committee or a family responsibility may keep caring about how it goes long after they stop being consulted, and that care can be misread as interference or as indifference depending on how they show it. Stepping back is a change in duty, not in feeling. The two are easy to confuse from either side.

If you are the one leaving, say what you would still like to hear about. If you are staying, send the occasional update without turning it into a request.
