A pause in public activity does not mean a person’s inner life stood still.

Visible output is a poor measure of a life. Long stretches with nothing announced can hold illness, caregiving, grief, rebuilding or plain thinking, none of which produces anything to show. Reading a quiet period as a blank usually says more about what you were looking for than about the person. Much of what changes anybody happens where nobody is watching.

When someone reappears after a long absence, ask what those years were like instead of what they have to show. Try extending the same reading to your own quiet stretches.
