You can enjoy making something that has no place in a shop or a portfolio.
CREATIVITY
CREATIVITY
Making has been almost entirely annexed by usefulness. If a thing cannot be sold, entered, posted or listed, the effort seems to need defending, and many people stop making anything rather than make something pointless. Yet the pleasure of shaping material is direct and requires no audience at all. A thing can exist simply because you enjoyed the hours it took.
Make one object this week that you plan to keep, give away casually, or throw out. Leave it unphotographed, and see whether the doing was enough on its own.
What would you make if it could never be shown?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
