A good critique respects the project you are making instead of replacing it with another.
CREATIVITY
CREATIVITY
There are two kinds of criticism and they are easy to confuse. One asks whether the thing succeeds at what it is trying to do; the other quietly proposes a different thing, usually the one the critic would have made. The second can be delivered with great intelligence and still be useless, because it never engaged with the actual attempt.
Before you comment on someone’s work, say back what you think they were going for and check it. Then keep your notes inside that aim. If you genuinely think the aim is wrong, say that separately and only once.
Whose work did you critique by describing the piece you wanted instead?
