The person asking to rebuild trust needs opportunities to behave differently, not only opportunities to explain.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Rebuilding trust is often approached through talking. Explanations, apologies and accounts of what went wrong all make sense, and none of them counts as evidence, because words were what broke last time. What restores confidence is a run of ordinary occasions where somebody could have done the same thing again and did not. That takes time, and it takes access.

If you are the one asking, look for chances to be different rather than chances to explain. If you are the one deciding, allow small, low-risk situations where the new behavior can show itself.
