Do not make someone compete with your similar experience while describing their own.

Recognition offered too quickly closes a story down. When someone begins telling you about their injury, their move or their loss and you jump in with your own version, the message they receive is that their account was a prompt for yours. Shared experience can be a comfort, but the timing decides whether it connects or competes.
Hold your story until theirs is finished. Ask a question or two first, and let the details be theirs rather than a category you have already filed. If your experience is genuinely useful, it will still be useful in five minutes, and by then they will actually want to hear it.
When did you last answer a friend’s story with your own instead?
