A closed chapter should leave the people in it free to tell their own account.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Endings tend to come with an authorised version. After a breakup, a business closing or a falling out, whoever speaks first and loudest sets the story, and anyone who remembers it differently has to choose between contradiction and silence. Insisting on a single account keeps a finished thing running long after it should have stopped.

If something of yours has ended, tell your side without requiring anyone to sign it. Let the other people describe the same events in words you would not have chosen. You do not have to agree with their version, and you do not have to correct it either.
