A better attempt should include what the first attempt taught you about the other person’s needs.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Trying again is only useful if the second try is different. When a gift, a plan or a conversation misses, the instinct is to repeat it with more effort, which usually delivers a larger version of the same mistake. What the failure gave you was information about what this particular person actually wanted, and that is the part to use.

Before you have another go, write down what you learned from how the first attempt landed. Change the thing that missed rather than the scale of the gesture. Then check with them if you can, since asking is faster than another round of guessing well.
